How a round works

European Blackjack is typically played with two decks of cards. Each round begins with the player placing a bet. Once the bet is confirmed, the dealer deals two cards to each player — both face up. The dealer also takes two cards, but under European rules the dealer's second card (the hole card) is not dealt until the end of the round — this is the key difference from American Blackjack.

The player's goal is to get the total value of their cards as close to 21 as possible without going over. An Ace can count as 1 or 11 — whichever is more favourable for the hand. Number cards count at face value, and all face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10.

After seeing their two cards, the player decides: Hit (take another card), Stand (stop without taking more cards), Double Down (double the bet and take exactly one additional card), or Split (split two cards of equal value into two separate hands). Once all players have made their decisions, the dealer reveals the hole card and draws according to the rules.

The dealer is generally required to draw on 16 or less and must stand on 17 or more (Soft 17 rules may vary by table). If the player's hand is higher than the dealer's and does not exceed 21, the player wins; if the dealer's hand is higher or the player goes over 21 (Bust), the dealer wins. If both hands are equal it is a Push — the bet is returned.

Round steps at a glance

  • 1 Place your bet within the set limits
  • 2 Dealer deals two cards; the dealer's hole card remains hidden
  • 3 Hit, Stand, Double or Split — make your decision
  • 4 Dealer reveals the hole card and draws according to the rules
  • 5 Result decided — win, loss or Push

Bet types and payouts

Several types of bets are available in European Blackjack. Each one is explained simply below rather than with numbers.

Main Bet

1:1

On a standard win you win an amount equal to your bet. That means a ৳100 bet returns ৳200 in total.

Main Bet

Blackjack (Naturals)

3:2

Getting 21 directly with an Ace and a 10-value card pays one and a half times your bet. This is the most sought-after outcome in Blackjack.

Highest Payout

Insurance Bet

2:1

When the dealer's first card is an Ace, you can place half your main bet as Insurance. If the dealer has Blackjack, the Insurance bet wins.

Managing Risk

Double Down

1:1 (doubles the bet)

On a favourable hand you can double your bet and take exactly one card. Since the total bet is doubled, a win also doubles your profit.

Aggressive Strategy

Split

1:1 per hand

If you receive two cards of equal value, you can split them and play two separate hands. Each hand requires an additional bet equal to the original.

Double the Hands

Push (Tie)

Bet returned

When the player's and dealer's hands are equal in value it is called a Push — nobody wins and the full bet is returned.

How low the house edge can go

Blackjack is considered one of the casino card games with the lowest house edge — especially when the correct basic strategy is applied. In European Blackjack, using two decks combined with specific rules can keep the house edge very low.

However, the house edge is a statistical concept — it works as an average over thousands of hands in the long run. In any single round the outcome can go either way.

Keep in mind: The Insurance bet is costly in the long run by the numbers. Experienced players generally avoid Insurance because the actual probability of the dealer having Blackjack is lower than the Insurance payout suggests.

joy9 has a variety of table games at joy9 Casino, where differences in rules affect the house edge. It is worth reading each table's rules carefully before playing.

Basic strategy for beginners

Basic strategy means making the mathematically best decision for every possible hand. Even without memorising it fully, the simple rules below are very helpful to start with.

When to Hit

  • Always Hit when your hand totals 11 or less
  • Hit on 12–16 when the dealer's card is 7 or higher
  • Generally Hit on a Soft hand (with an Ace) below 17

When to Stand

  • Always Stand when your hand totals 17 or more
  • Stand on 13–16 when the dealer's card is 2–6
  • Generally Stand on Soft 18 or above

When to Double Down

  • Double in almost all cases when your hand totals 11
  • Double on 10 when the dealer's card is 9 or less
  • Consider Doubling on 9 when the dealer's card is 3–6

When to Split

  • Always Split a pair of Aces
  • A pair of 8s is generally better Split as well
  • Never Split a pair of 10s — a total of 20 is very strong
Be honest about the limits of strategy: Basic strategy helps reduce the house edge but does not guarantee a win. Each round is independent and does not depend on previous results. To learn more about playing responsibly, read the responsible gaming guidelines.

Live Dealer vs Digital version

Live Dealer Blackjack

  • Real dealer and actual cards — watched live via video streaming
  • The feel of sitting at the same table as other players
  • Option to chat with the dealer
  • Multiple variants on Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live tables
  • Real casino atmosphere enjoyed from home
  • Table limits are generally higher than digital

Digital (RNG) Blackjack

  • A Random Number Generator (RNG) ensures every hand is completely random
  • Start and stop playing at any time — no waiting
  • Take your time to think through strategy before deciding
  • Usually possible to start playing with smaller bet limits
  • Ideal for quick rounds on mobile
  • Suitable for beginners practising strategy

joy9's live Blackjack tables feature games from world-class studios such as Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live. Dealers at these tables can communicate in both Bengali and English. Many players who enjoy slots or other games take a break at the Blackjack table since strategy plays a much greater role here — some come over from slots for exactly that reason.

Beginners playing the digital version can practise basic strategy at their own pace. For any questions, joy9's 24/7 live chat support is available in Bengali.

Table limits — how much can you bet

In European Blackjack, bet limits vary across tables so that players with both small and large budgets can play. joy9 generally offers both lower-limit tables and high-limit VIP tables.

Low-limit tables are ideal for beginners and those who want to learn strategy gradually. High-limit tables, on the other hand, let experienced players place larger bets and win significant amounts in a single round.

Live dealer tables generally have a higher minimum bet than digital tables, as they involve studio operating costs. At special VIP or exclusive tables, the maximum limit can go much higher.

At joy9, members at higher tiers of the joy9 VIP program can access special tables with different limits and a different experience. At the Diamond tier, weekly cashback can be up to 0.8%.

Digital (RNG) — Beginner Low Limit
Digital (RNG) — Standard Medium Limit
Live Dealer — Standard Medium–High

Frequently Asked Questions

The biggest difference is when the dealer takes the hole card. In the American version, the dealer takes two cards at the start of the game and checks the hole card immediately if the first card is an Ace. Under European rules, the dealer takes one card first and only draws the second card after all players have made their decisions. This slightly increases the risk of the dealer hitting blackjack after a player's Double Down or Split.

Basic strategy is built on mathematics — analysing millions of hands has shown which decision causes the least loss in each situation over the long run. However, it does not guarantee a win. In any single session, luck and randomness always play a role. Strategy mainly reduces the house edge; it does not ensure a win.

Statistically, Insurance is not profitable in the long run. Given the number of 10-value cards in the deck, the Insurance payout (2:1) is not actually favourable. Most basic strategy charts advise avoiding Insurance unless you are counting cards (which is not possible at digital tables).

A Soft hand means you have an Ace in your hand that is counting as 11. Example: Ace + 6 = Soft 17. Drawing another card on this hand cannot cause a Bust (because the Ace will then count as 1). So you can afford to be a little more aggressive with a Soft hand. Hitting or Doubling on Soft 17 is better than Standing in most situations.

Yes. In Live Dealer Blackjack, a dealer runs the game with real cards in an actual studio. Players can watch everything live through video streaming. The card-shuffling process is also shown on camera.
